Tree Surgery

Trees often require pruning, reducing and monitoring especially in built up areas or where there are high risk targets beneath them such as houses, roads and footpaths. It is also important for us to manage the trees we currently have, maintaining their health and safety for future generations. The team of tree surgeon are fully qualified and utilise a large array of specialist equipment in and around Shrewsbury, enabling them to carry out tree surgery operations on whatever tree's they are faced with, from climbing and using lowering devices, zip-lines, pulleys and winches to using specialist ladders for orchards and fruit trees. The team are also IPAF qualified and often use access platforms ranging from 12m to 50m in height allowing safe and efficient access to the crown of the tree to carry out the required tree surgery operations.

Kiln Dried Firewood

In 2019, following on from government recommendations we opted to kiln dry all of our firewood. This method of drying the logs using hot air, which is a waste product from a local biogas plant, is not only renewable but it also allows us to carefully monitor and control the moisture content of the wood ensuring a clean, efficient burning product is guaranteed every time. Our firewood is sold by the cubic metre, (a measured volume which never changes unlike buying firewood by its weight) and is delivered loose in a tipping van. Delivery is free within 10 miles of our yard in Wem, a small mileage fee is added for journeys outside this. Our firewood is a mixture of timber attained from our tree surgery works and also locally sourced, sustainably harvested cordwood purchased from timber merchants.

Sawmilling

A professional Woodmizer sawmill makes light work of milling oversized pieces of timber into useable beams, boards and cladding. The electric setworks, debarker, head up and down and power feed combined with the large band-width gives us the ability to mill timber up to almost a metre diameter and six metres long and produce millimetre perfect cuts every time. We can create custom pieces from our own large woodstock or you can bring your own timber to us. We also stock a range of pre-sawn timber products in the most commonly used sizes. Sustainable milling is something Josh strives for, in late 2020 he purchased 1000 Oak tree saplings for resale and planting around the county, providing timber for future generations and contributing towards the UK's tree planting quota.

Woodland Management

Our trees and woodland are under increasing strain and pressure from pests and diseases, deforestation and urbanisation. It is for this reason we must manage what we currently have and also strive to plant more for future generations. Woodlands can be managed for their wildlife and amenity value and also from a commercial perspective for the production of timber. We are able to carry out woodland management from first thinnings with the aim of producing high quality timber in the future from remaining trees, to complete clear felling of mature plantations. For jobs where more than 5 cubic metres of timber is going to be removed a felling licence is required from the Forestry Commission, we can organise this and complete all relevant documentation as an agent. In 2021 we are able to offer a planting service of native British grown trees from our own stock of over 1000 saplings, species include; Oak, Silver birch, Horse chestnut, Alder, Larch, Scots pine and Rowan.

Hedge Trimming

Hedges come in a variety of heights, widths, shapes and species. We are equipped with high power petrol hedge trimmers with rough cut blades capable of taming the most overgrown of hedges and also machines with fine cut blades suitable for trimming ornamental hedges and Conifer, giving a clean precise cut allowing for healthy regrowth the following growing season. Mature hedges (such as Leylandii garden hedges and hawthorn field hedges) often need reducing and may require additional equipment such as tree shears and chainsaws. Ladders, access platforms and long reach trimmers also allow us to deal with even the largest of hedgerows and if needed we can provide a tractor and flail for cutting field and paddock hedgerows. We have a large number of regular clients whose hedges are trimmed on a yearly basis including domestic garden hedges and shrubs, mature hedges in the grounds of stately homes and country estate and also hedges on industrial estates and surrounding factories.

Emergency Callout & Dangerous Tree Removal

There are numerous reasons why a tree might become unsafe or fail; saturated ground conditions making root systems unstable, storms/strong winds and pests/diseases living off trees making them prone to failure. We can have trees surveyed to asses their health and offer advice on the most suitable options for their future management or removal. We are always on call to deal with trees which require urgent action. Storm damaged trees can be much more challenging to deal with, often falling in awkward locations and damaging other trees or property in the process. Diseased trees, for example Ash trees infected with Ash die back disease (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) may also be unsuitable to climb and may only be safe to dismantle with mechanical equipment. We can supply tractors, winches, diggers, loaders, chippers, trailers, access platforms and many other mechanical aids to assist us in safely and efficiently dealing with failed trees.
